Worried about taking family photos in the winter? Nervous that you can’t have fun winter family photos in the snow and that summer or fall is the only time to do them? I promise you that you can still have fun & beautiful family photos in the snowy winter time.
Family photos in the snow CAN be magical—think crisp white backgrounds, cozy layers, and kids’ rosy cheeks! But let’s face it if you are not prepared the cold really can be an issue. As a family photographer serving the beautiful Bear Lake area and surrounding regions, I’ve seen firsthand how thoughtful preparation can make a winter session a joyful and memorable experience. Whether you’re a mom planning your family’s photo session or just want to capture some wintry fun, here are my top five tips for success, and of course fun a pretty photos!
1- Dress for the Weather (and the Camera)!
Staying warm doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style. The key is to layer up! Stick to neutral or deep winter colors that will pop against the snow. Think colors like forest greens, rich blues, burgundies, or warm grays. Just really try to avoid white—while it looks stunning in other seasons, it can blend into snowy backdrops and wash you out.
Also don’t be afraid to Accessorize! Think knit hats, scarves, and mittens in complementary tones and colors for a nice polished, cozy look. And be sure and don’t forget proper footwear—stylish boots that can handle a little snow is most ideal.

2- Incorporate Fun Winter Props
Props are, what I like to say, the secret ingredient for turning a chilly session into a family adventure. They add personality and give kids (and adults) something fun to do during the shoot. Plus they allow for more fun memory making opportunities during your session!
Here are some fun ideas to get you started.
- A fun sled for playful poses and fun memories!
- A thermos of hot cocoa with marshmallows. (And a bonus, it keeps your hands warm!)
- A blanket for some fun cuddly group shots.
- A carrot & coal for building a snowman together.
- Snowballs for some really fun playful photos.
Props to me aren’t just practical, but they really do help create authentic memories that shine through in your photos. They help make your photo session fell more like a fun family experience rather then just posing in front of a camera.
3- Keep the Kiddos Happy (and of course Warm)
Keeping children comfortable and happy is essential for those genuine smiles. But you may be thinking that is easier said then done, especially in the cold of winter. Here are some of my favorite quick tips on how to keep those kiddos happy during your winter family photos.
- Bring layers! Start with warm base layers (like thermal shirts and tights) to go underneath their outfits. This will ensure they stay warmer and happier longer.
- Use hand warmers. Pop some pocket hand warmers into jackets—they really are lifesavers on chilly days.
- Plan breaks. If your session is a little longer, plan for quick breaks to warm up between shots.
- Bring Snacks or candy! This is a great tip for any family session, but using snacks and candy as bribes between shots really can help keep younger kids happy and focused.
And a Bonus Pro Tip, Let kids be kids! Embrace the moments of laughter or snow play—it creates natural and heartwarming photos!!
4- Prefer to Stay Cozy? Indoor Sessions Are Perfect Too!
Not a fan of bundling up in freezing temps? And still not sold on the idea of heading into the snow for your fun winter family photos? No problem! Winter doesn’t mean that you have to venture outdoors to capture beautiful family moments. Indoor sessions are a fantastic alternative! They can create a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Plus you still get gorgeous family photos without braving the snow.
And whether you choose the comfort of your own home or a styled indoor studio setup, the options are absolutely endless! You can even still incorporate some fun activities and ideas in your session as well. Some of these fun, family-focused (indoor) activities you can incorporate include are:
- Baking cookies together (imagine the kids sneaking bites of dough, or flour on each others faces!)
- Snuggling up on the couch with your favorite blankets and some delicious hot cocoa.
- Decorating the Christmas tree (or setting up and doing a winter-themed craft).
Indoor sessions allow for a relaxed feel while keeping everyone warm and happy—and they look just as stunning as outdoor portraits!
5. Communicate with Your Photographer

And trust me when I say: a little planning goes a long way toward ensuring you’ll love your final gallery. And that you will make fun memoires and truly cherish your photos for years to come!
